What is the difference between COGS and overhead?

Cost of goods sold is what a job consumed — materials, subs, the crew hours on that work. Overhead is what the business costs whether or not you sold anything, like insurance or the truck payment. The split is what Margin measures, so putting an overhead cost in COGS makes every job look worse than it is.
