What categories do expenses go into, and why does it matter?

Fourteen categories, the ones a tax return actually asks for — materials, labour, vehicle, tools, insurance, advertising and so on. A bank or card charge arrives already categorised; a hand-logged one takes the category you pick. The same categories feed three things at once: the Schedule C mapping on the Taxes page, the margin calculation, and the Business Health expense ratio — so re-categorising one expense moves all three, and the categories you mark as job costs in Settings decide what counts as cost of goods.
